ASU groups support needy for the holidays

— Athens State University’s ASSIST Student United Way group and Psi Chi teamed together this holiday season to make it a brighter one for area residents.

The two organizations raised more than $1,600 and exceeded their goals for this year’s sponsorship of needy families.

“We had a goal of helping 2 families, raising 1,000 cans of food, and sponsoring 12 children,” said Jean Martin and Dr. Mark Durm, organization co-sponsors. “We exceeded our goals in all areas and were able to assist the United Way of Limestone County and the Mental Health Center for North Central Alabama.”

The two groups completed their drive by sponsoring 25 total children, collecting more 1,000 cans of food and donating $450 in cash.

Athens State’s ASSIST group is comprised of co-eds who support the United Way, and the Psi Chi chapter is the institution’s international honor society in psychology.

Money was raised in a year-long effort by taking donations of money and canned foods and by funds raised through booth sponsorship at the Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention.
