Limestone inmate recovering from stabbing

Incident under investigation

— A Limestone Correctional inmate was scheduled to return to the facility Monday evening after being stabbed Sunday by another inmate, said the Alabama Department of Corrections.

Brian Corbett, public information manager for the DOC, confirmed Monday that Antonio Letae Cunningham, 33, was stabbed at about 7:45 p.m. Sunday in an “inmate-on-inmate assault.”

Cunningham was taken by MedFlight helicopter to Huntsville Hospital and is now in stable to fair condition, Corbett said. The incident remains under investigation.

“His injuries are non-life threatening, and he is recovering,” Corbett said.

Corrections records show Cunningham was convicted Oct. 24, 2011, in Shelby County. He is serving a 10-year sentence for obscenity and violation of the sex offender registration law, and is scheduled for release Dec. 27, 2020, according to the DOC inmate database.

Cunningham was convicted in Shelby County in October 2007 on a charge of first-degree, strong-arm sodomy involving a 16-year-old boy, according to records with the Department of Public Safety.

Limestone facility

Limestone is a "close security" facility designed for incarcerating the most violent and highest classified offenders in the DOC system, which had 31,187 inmates as of July 1. A 2011 DOC report stated, “… it is necessary to house a significant number of inmates with a lower custody classification in (close security) facilities because of prison system crowding.”

Limestone, which opened in 1984, has 2,040 beds with a designated capacity of 1,314. Based on March report data from the DOC, the facility had a 148 percent occupancy rate, or 1,945 inmates.

In the most recent full reporting year, the DOC reported the Limestone facility had 2,138 inmates in fiscal year 2011, with 31 assaults. Through March 31, Limestone reported 15 assaults this year.
