Limestone inmates hold Christmas tree decorating contest

Some inmates at Limestone Correctional Facility brought Christmas to the prison this year in the form of a handmade Santa’s workshop filled with a cardboard ATV, telescope, basketball hoop, tricycle, train and tunnel and other gifts.

It was all a part of the annual Christmas tree decorating competition held Friday at the prison. First place went to members of Dormitory G, for their detailed Santa’s workshop.

No state funds were spent for any part of the competition.

Instead, inmates had to create handmade decorations using materials available to them in the prison.

Each dorm was judged according to the following categories: Creativity, craftsmanship, presentation, use of materials, variety and theme. The following prizes were awarded:

• First place — Two Krispy Kreme donuts;

• Second place — A hotdog picnic on the visitation yard inside the facility;

• Third place  — An extra store draw from the facilities’ canteen.

Prizes were bought using the Institutional Contingency Fund, which is created through profits from inmate canteen sales.

Judges for the competition included state Sen. Bill Holtzclaw, R-Madison; Madison Police Detective Marcus Adams, and Deputy Warden Dorothy Goode.
