Athens Fire Station No. 1 flooded this morning

ATHENS — The sprinkler system at Fire Station No. 1 on Washington Street ruptured around 3 a.m. today, according to officials. The station was flooded after the line broke in about five places.

Fire Chief Tony Kirk said about 2 inches of water accumulated throughout the station as part of the ceiling fell into the sleeping quarters. No one was injured.

The bays are operational but the living quarters and office area are not usable, officials said. The Alabama Fire College is bringing two trailers to Station 1 to house firefighters.

Firefighters are checking to see what furniture and gear can be salvaged. Kirk said repairs will probably take at least 60 days.
