A Limestone County man died Thursday night after a confrontation with his stepfather over the repossession of a sport-utility vehicle.
Jonathan Kevin Johnson, 28, was pronounced dead at 7:13 p.m. in the emergency room at Athens-Limestone Hospital from a single gunshot wound to his chest, according to Coroner Mike West.
The shooting was reported at 6:22 p.m. at a residence on Red Bird Lane in the Capshaw community near the Limestone-Madison county line.
Sheriff Mike Blakely said the victim’s stepfather, Tim Johnson of Decatur, and a friend went to the residence to repossess a 1999 Chevrolet Blazer and Tim exchanged words with his stepson, known as Kevin.
The stepson pulled a .40-caliber Ruger pistol from his waistband, his stepfather grabbed at the gun and it went off, striking Kevin once in the chest, said Blakely.
The sheriff said no charges are being filed at this time but the case will likely be presented to a grand jury, which will determine whether there is enough evidence for formal charges.
The coroner said he took Johnson’s body Thursday night to the state forensic lab in Huntsville for an autopsy.
