Man charged with DUI, leaving scene of wreck

ATHENS — Investigators believe alcohol was a factor in a wreck that injured one man and led to the arrest of another Tuesday night.

Athens Police Officers Kurt Wimberly and McKinley McWhorter were called to the scene of a wreck on West Hobbs Street near Bullington Road about 7 p.m. and found that a Kia Optima that had been westbound on Hobbs had been rear-ended by a truck driven by Daniel Neal Bates, 34, of 7084 U.S. 72 West, according to Police Lt. Trevor Harris. The Kia then struck a nearby town home at Sycamore Place on Hobbs.

A witness had followed Bates after he left the scene of the accident, Harris said. Bates continued a short distance before crashing into a ditch on the opposite side of the road and was standing near his truck when officers arrived, Harris said.

The driver of the Kia was taken by ambulance to Athens-Limestone Hospital for treatment. Bates suffered minor injuries but declined treatment.

An investigation determined alcohol was a factor in the crash, and Bates was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, Harris said.

He was booked at the Police Department and transferred to the Limestone County Jail, where bail was set at $6,000.
