Alabama school board mandates shooter drills

— MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — In the wake of the killing of a school bus driver in Midland City, the State Board of Education is instructing all schools to conduct drills at least twice annually addressing intruders and active shooters.

The board passed a resolution for the drills Thursday. Al.com (http://bit.ly/X9AUxK ) reports that the resolution also mandates that select personnel in each school system participate in active-shooter training provided by the state Department of Homeland Security.

The resolution comes after Jimmy Lee Dykes boarded a Dale County school bus Jan. 29, killing the driver and kidnapping a kindergarten student. FBI officers killed him after a seven-day standoff.

The board also voted to extend the contract of state school Superintendent Tommy Bice for one year to Dec. 31, 2015, at the same salary of $198,000 annually.
