Hospital board chooses new CEO

— The Athens-Limestone Hospital board of directors announced today the hiring of Pelham native David Pryor as CEO effective June 2, according to an ALH media release.

Pryor, the chief operating officer at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center in Hartville, South Caroline, is replacing fifth-year CEO Kelli Powers, who will begin as chief finance officer at affiliate Huntsville Hospital on July 1.

“I am excited about joining the Athens-Limestone Hospital family and am looking forward to settling my family in the wonderful area of Athens, Alabama,” said Pryor, who has 24 years of experience in the healthcare field.

He is only the fourth Athens CEO in the past 28 years, following Powers (2010-14), Cary Payne (2007-09) and Phil Dotson (1986-2006). Pryor will supervise about 770 employees and an approximately $61 million operating budget.

The board, which held a special called meeting to approve its new hospital chief since its next regular meeting is May 27, chose Pryor after whittling down the 26-applicant field to three finalists in April.

“David Pryor will be a great asset to Athens-Limestone Hospital and we are confident he will hit the ground running,” said Board Chairman Steve Smith. “His knowledge and understanding of the issues which are important to healthcare will ensure our continued success well into the future.”

Pryor also has served as CEO at Williamson Memorial Hospital in Williamson, West Virginia. He has a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from Samford University in Birmingham and a master in science in health services administration from St. Francis University in Joilet, Illinois.

He and his wife, Tonya, a Holly Pond native, have four children.
