Unit 2 at Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant was shut down Thursday night in preparation for a scheduled refueling and maintenance outage.
TVA spokesman Mike Bradley said the unit was placed in a “controlled downpower” leading up to the 10 p.m. shutdown. The unit is now is a cold shutdown and will remain offline during the outage. Units 1 and 3 will continue producing electricity.
Bradley said about one-third of the fuel in Unit 2’s core would be replaced by new fuel assemblies. While the unit is offline, he said, maintenance technicians would repair, modify, upgrade and refurbish plant equipment in preparation for a long operational run.
“Conducting major maintenance work during a planned refueling outage is a safe and efficient way of boosting equipment reliability and safety margins, and is considered a ‘best practice’ of the nuclear power industry,” Bradley said.
