Councilmen ID projects needed in their districts

By Jean Cole

— With money now rolling in from a 1-cent sales tax increase implemented in January, Athens City Council members are already identifying projects that could be paid for with the additional money.

Mayor Ronnie Marks asked council members to bring a list of the most-needed projects in their districts to a work session Friday. Their submissions are listed below by district. “For the first time in the history of Athens, we are able to project and plan instead of reacting at the end of the year,” Marks said of the proceeds from the 1-cent tax increase.

City Clerk Annette Barnes supplied council members with detailed spreadsheets showing that by the end of September, the 1-cent sales tax increase would have generated about $3 million total for the city, and where it could be spent. The tax is expected to generate $4 million in 12 months and $19 million in five years, she said.
