Athens ceremony honors fallen law enforcement officers

— Michelle Russell addressed a crowd gathered on the courthouse lawn for Athens Police Memorial Day on Thursday. Russell is the wife of Athens Police officer Larry Russell who was killed in the line of duty with Sgt. Tony Mims in January 2004.

Officers from Athens Police Department and Limestone County Sheriff’s Office, and representatives from state and local governments attended the ceremony.

Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson read the names of all nine law enforcement members killed in the line of duty within Limestone County.

Russell’s youngest son, Jacob, lead the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Money was raised to place flagpoles on the graves of the slain officers. Flag services begin Friday.
