Lightning knocks out warning siren

— Lightning is to blame for an out-of-order warning siren, according to officials with the Limestone County Emergency Management Agency.

The siren, located at the intersection of Miller Lane and Alabama 251, was likely knocked out in February, EMA Director Rita White said.

She said officials first noticed the siren was not functioning during the last monthly test on March 11. The siren was functioning during the February test, she said.

She did not know a timeframe for when the siren would be repaired. She added the county’s sirens are all insured, and officials would have to get a repair estimate and go through the insurance company.

EMA officials urge residents to not rely on the outdoor sirens during severe weather, because they may not be heard indoors. Officials instead urge the use of NOAA weather radios, television coverage and battery-powered radios.
