No. 3 Athens boys upend No. 2 Wenonah, extend winning streak to 24 games

East girls fall in heartbreaker; Tanner girls poised to advance to regional final

The Limestone County hoops delegation carried five teams to this week’s Northwest Regional Tournament at Tom Drake Coliseum in Hanceville, with the third-ranked Athens boys pulling off the day’s biggest upset with a 76-72 victory against No. 2 Wenonah, a team that beat its previous opponent by 98 points in the sub-regional round.

The win also extended the Golden Eagles’ winning streak to 24 games in Class 5A as Athens built a 44-26 halftime advantage and held off a rally fueled by long-range shooting by the Dragons.

Athens, led by star guard Giddy Potts’ 32 points and 12 rebounds and Trey Potts’ 17 points and 17 rebounds, advances to the regional finals against Parker on Friday.

The 2A Tanner girls (19-7) are leading Cold Springs (27-6) 44-30 after three quarters in this afternoon’s game.

Kelsey Houston is leading the way with 16 points, with Kirstin Brown (15) and Sydney Houston (10) also in double-figures with a quarter remaining.

The East Limestone girls fell to Pleasant Grove in a 50-48 heartbreaker this morning during the 5A regional semifinals, despite 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting from Brennan Crabtree in the Indians’ first regional tournament appearance in 15 seasons.

Point guard Rachael Diamond added 11 points, six rebounds and five assists for East (26-8), while Pleasant Grove improved to 24-7.

The Tanner boys (18-8) will play at 4:30 p.m. today against Cold Springs, while the 4A West Limestone boys (20-12) face Butler (12-11) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
