Waxing historic: Cowart students create ‘wax museum' for Black History project

Former astronaut Mae Jemison, baseball legend Jackie Robinson, the heroic Tuskegee Airmen and other greats visited Cowart Elementary School in Athens Wednesday.

They came in the form of “wax museum” figures to mark Black History Month, said Stacey Hart, the school counselor who planned the February project.

Six students from the third and fourth grades donned costumes befitting the characters and portrayed Jemison, Robinson and the airmen as well as Olympic track and field star Wilma Rudolph, World War II naval officer Doris “Dorie” Miller, and Maggie Walker, the first female bank president of any race, Hart said.

Six other students acted as museum guides, telling tourists about the notable black Americans, she said.

Students in kindergarten through fourth grades toured the “wax museum” and listened to the presentations, Hart said.

“They had a wonderful time, and it surprised me how much research they did on their characters,” she said. “But then, that was the point.”
