Athens writer to sell books to help abused pit bull

ATHENS — Athens writer Barbara McGreger is planning to sell her books and raise money for a Limestone County dog found with an imbedded collar.

Moved by the story of a dog-owner’s recent neglect of a red pit bull terrier, McGreger plans to give a portion of the books she sells online and at an April 6 book-signing to Town & Country Animal Hospital in Athens to help defray the cost of treating the pit bull, which has since been named Honey.

“I wanted to help Honey turn this page in her life,” McGreger said.

In February, a woman brought a pit bull to the hospital with a 22-pound log chain deeply imbedded in its neck. Though she said she found the dog and wanted to adopt it, a Limestone County Sheriff’s investigator later determined she was its owner and charged her with animal cruelty. The dog, which remains in the hospital’s care, has since been named Honey.

McGreger is selling two of her books — “The Last Mile Home: Ordinary Insights from an Extraordinary Life,” second edition ($9.95) and “Covered and Smothered: Devotionals for Whatever Life Brings Your Way” ($12.95) at a book sale and signing from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 6 at Pablo’s on Market at 216 W. Market St. in Athens.

Orders can also be made through her email at lastmilehome@gmail.com. (Buyers should put the phrase “TURN THE PAGE” in the email subject line.) Proceeds from those sales will go to Dr. John Hammons at Town & Country hospital.

According to her biography, McGreger has spent the last 25 years in North Alabama. She has been writing since age 12. She published her first book, “The Last Mile Home,” two years ago and recently published her second, “Covered and Smothered.” She is working on a third book about her journey of faith with her special-needs son. She’s a Sunday school teacher and continues to write devotionals for her church.
