Sewer upgrades may bring new growth

The City of Athens voted Monday to apply for a grant that will construct what could be considered much-needed infrastructure within the city.

The city is hoping to secure funds through an SRF loan that totals $2.93 million and will be used for French Mill Piney Creek Sanitary Sewer interceptors.

The project, which has been a topic of discussion during the past couple of years, will build interceptor sewers from Canebrake Pumping Station northward along Piney Creek and connect to existing sewers on U.S. 72 and northeastward along French Mill Creek and across Mooresville Road.

Mayor Ronnie Marks said there are presently a few issues at the location.

“One is, right now, we are physically hauling sewage by truck out of those subdivisions inside the city limits,” Marks said. “Interceptor sewers will help us develop retail and any other commercial structures on U.S. 72 at Mooresville Road as well as bring the sewer over close to 306 BBQ for any development over there..."
