Attorney seeks mental evaluation for jailed Memon

By Jean Cole

— The attorney for the Madison student who is accused of fatally shooting a fellow student at Discovery Middle School in Madison has asked a judge to allow a mental evaluation of his client.

Attorney James Parkman, of Parkman & White LLC in Birmingham, filed the request Wednesday in Madison County Circuit Court, records show.

In the request, he asks the court to order Madison County Jail officials to allow a defense expert to examine Hammad Ahmad Memon of Madison. The attorney had previously made the request but jail officials told him they needed a court order.

Memon is charged with murder in the 2010 shooting of Todd Brown at the middle school they both attended.

Memon was returned to jail after being free on bail after he allegedly attempted to flee the country with the help of his parents, Iqbal and Safia Memon. The couple is charged with hindering prosecution.

Parkman states in his request that he would like the examination to be conducted Feb. 15.

The attorney plans to present an insanity defense for his client.

His trial will be scheduled sometime this year.
