ATHENS —

A man on trial for burglary, kidnapping and robbery in the 2010 attack on a Tanner couple decided to plead guilty just as the jury was about to deliberate.

He will be sentenced to serve 30 years in prison.

Damien Lamar Mitchell, 21, of Athens, pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree robbery, tw counts of second-degree kidnapping and one count of third-degree burglary.

Prosecutors say Mitchell drove the getaway vehicle the night of the attack and that Joshua Cowan and Mario Taylor carried out the burglary, assault, kidnapping and robbery of Charlotte and Shirley Haney at their home in southern Limestone County. Cowan is serving a 75 year sentence. Taylor pleaded guilty and received a life sentence, which he is now appealing.
