Senate expands role of nurse practitioners

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama Senate has passed legislation to expand what nurse practitioners are allowed to do.

The bill sponsored by Republican Sen. Greg Reed of Jasper got approved 27-1 Tuesday and now goes to the House for consideration. It authorizes the state Board of Medical Examiners to allow nurse practitioners and nurse midwives to prescribe some pain killers. Reed said 48 states already grant authority to write the prescriptions.

Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh of Anniston said the bill should cut costs and improve access to health care, particularly in rural areas.
