Ardmore new gym to be built for growth

—  Within a few years, Ardmore High School could tangle on the hardwood in a nearly 2,000-seat gymnasium with another school that bears the Tigers’ black-and-gold color scheme.

Ardmore is the 24th largest member among 64 Class 4A schools with a daily attendance of 383 high school students, based on the 2010-12 listing by the Alabama High School Athletic Association.

Athens High School is the city’s only 9-12 school and the largest located in Limestone County. The Golden Eagles’ enrollment is 13th largest of 63 schools in 5A with 639 students, while East Limestone High School is 48th with 484.

Ardmore, whose main gym was built 28 years ago, is projected to add 380 students within the next 10 years, according to a demographics study commissioned by Limestone County Schools.

The school system is embarking on a two-phase, $26.1 million capital improvement plan starting this year with a $4.2 million new gym for Ardmore. The gym is expected to break ground by July, according to Superintendent Dr. Tom Sisk.
