Athens school board members closed a portion of their meeting Wednesday night to privately discuss what one board member called “potential legal action.”
The seven-member board first held a brief meeting at 5 p.m. at the Central Office boardroom. It consisted of approving three personnel changes and hearing the superintendent’s report.
Under Alabama law, the board is allowed to meet privately if, for example, they are going to discuss a current or pending legal matter or the “good name and character” of an employee.
During the open portion of the meeting, the board approved a request for retirement from Lisa Kelly, first-grade teacher at Julian Newman Elementary School. They also agreed to hire Roderick Hubbard as systemwide special education instructional aide at Brookhill Elementary School and Marybeth Pate as latchkey teacher at Brookhill.
After about two hours, the board emerged from the closed session without discussing the matter or taking a vote, then adjourned the meeting.
