County OK’s industrial park status for Carpenter Tech plant

— The $518 million specialty alloys plant being constructed by Carpenter Technology in Tanner has been designated an industrial park.

Following a public hearing during Monday’s meeting, the County Commission approved the development of Carpenter Industrial Park and a governmental services agreement with Carpenter Tech.

The county agreed to contract with Morell Engineering in Athens to oversee the Thomas L. Hammonds Road construction project, which leads to the 500,000-square foot plant off U.S. 31.

Reed Contract Services of Lacey’s Spring submitted the winning low bid of $569,739 for the road project, which will be financed by a $630,000, non-matching grant from the Alabama Department of Transportation.

In other business, the commission approved the following:

• an agreement with Limestone County Water and Sewer Authority to lease the second floor of the Customer Service Building at 520 South Jefferson Street to temporarily house the Circuit Court Clerk’s office during courthouse renovations;

• hiring Brandon Baker and Daniel Craig as sheriff’s deputies and Marcia Pratt as license tag clerk, pending drug and alcohol screenings;

• promotion of Bill Boldin to Equipment Operator III in District 2;

• setting a 25 mile per hour in Ferry Road subdivision in District 3;

• merit increases to Emily Ezzell and James Hardaway;

• a public auction on Oct. 26 at the Sheriff’s Office for a 2003 Ford F-150 pickup truck, 2000 F-350 patch truck, 1999 Crown Victoria,  1997 GMC Model TC 10703 and 1994 Ford F-700 dump truck.

The commission will hold a work session at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, at the Washington Street courthouse annex.
