ATHENS —

Athens Utilities is warning its customers about an attempted email fraud.

The utility said a customer received an email regarding a debit/credit card on file that supposedly has expired. The email includes "City of Athens Utilities" in the subject line. This is not a legitimate email.

The email reads:

“Subject:City of Athens Utilities Saved Card Expiration Notice

“From: no-reply@utilityflex.com

“To: XXX (recipient’s name x’d out)

“Cc:

“One or more of the debit/credit cards you have on file has expired. Please follow the link provided here to update your account information.

“If you do not wish to receive further notifications concerning the expiration date on your saved card(s), then you may disable this feature by clicking the link above and changing the Expiration Date Notifications option to 'No'.”

Utility officials said the email was not issued by Athens Utilities or an agent of Athens Utilities even though “Athens Utilities” is in the subject line.  Those who receive the email should not respond to this request in any way and should not click the link.

Officials said anyone who receives one of these emails or any type of suspicious email should notify Customer Relations Manager Amy Golden at agolden@athens-utilities.com
