Blown fuse cause of downtown power outage

ATHENS —

A blown fuse was the cause of a power outage Monday evening that left downtown Athens in the dark.

Amy Golden, customer relations manager for Athens Utilities, said Tuesday 45 customers were without power when a fuse blew at the substation.

The outage happened just before 6 p.m. and power returned less than an hour later, around 6:50 p.m.

Businesses around the Courthouse Square and others just off the square were affected.

Traffic lights also went dark but most motorists approached the intersections as four-way stops and no wrecks related to the outage were reported.
