Walk to raise tremor awareness set for March 22

— The North Alabama Essential Tremor Awareness group would like for people of all ages and all walks of life to put on their walking shoes and help raise awareness of essential tremor.

March is National Essential Tremor Awareness Month and Saturday, March 22, has been designated as the day to “Walk for ET” to raise both awareness and funds for the International Essential Tremor Foundation.

The North Alabama Essential Tremor Support Group will walk at 2 p.m., March 22, at the Madison Wellness Center at 8391 U.S. 72 West.

“We will have information available and would encourage anyone who has a tremor or knows someone who may have ET to join us,” said Elise Hickman of the North Alabama ET Support Group.

Essential tremor is a neurological condition that causes shaking of the head, hands and voice. An estimated 10 million people in the United States have ET, according to the Foundation. While not life threatening, ET is a serious and progressive condition that can significantly affect a person’s quality of life — socially, professionally and emotionally.

Members of the Foundation said people with ET often have difficulty with everyday activities such as getting dressed, eating, drinking, speaking or writing. Although, there are a large number of people affected by ET, members said there is still very little awareness of the disorder.

“March is an important time for all those affected by ET,” IETF Executive Director Catherine Rice said. “We believe that by taking our message to the streets and encouraging those affected to talk about their condition, the increased awareness will eventually bring about better treatment options and a cure for this life-altering condition. The designation of March as National Essential Tremor Awareness Month provides the Foundation with another platform to educate the public about the condition.”

Those interested in participating in the Walk for ET can complete an online registration at essentialtremor.org. However, walkers do not have to be registered to participate.

The North Alabama Essential Tremor Support Group will plan the ET Walk from 2-4 p.m. Saturday at the Madison Wellness Center.
