Legislative office to open Monday

— An office that will service as a point of contact between constituents and the local legislative delegation will officially open next week.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the office, located in Suite E-4 in the College Street Center on College Street in Athens.

The two-room office, which formerly housed Athco, is being leased to the delegation by Athens State University for $6,000 a year. Funding for the office was made possible from TVA-in-lieu-of-tax funds.

Limestone County receives TVA funds, and then disburses those monies to the city and local agencies. A change in the law allowed the local legislative delegation — which also receives part of the TVA money — to spend a portion of it to create the local legislative office and to offer economic development grants.

State Sen. Bill Holtzclaw said the office would service an important function, because Limestone is one of the fastest growing counties in the nation.
