Calhoun presenting 12th annual writers conference

— Calhoun Community College will present its 12th-annual writers conference April 11 at the college’s Aerospace Training Center on the Decatur campus.

To accommodate the anticipated standing-room-only crowd, this event will be held at 9 a.m. at Calhoun and again at 7 p.m. at the Princess Theatre in downtown Decatur. Both performances are open to the public.

The featured writer for this year’s event is Judith Ortiz Cofer. The Puerto Rico-native serves as a Franklin professor of English and creative writing at the University of Georgia. She is the author of “A Love Story Beginning in Spanish,” “Call Me Maria,”

“The Meaning of Consuelo,” and “Woman in Front of the Sun: On Becoming a Writer.”

She is the recipient of the American Library Association’s Pura Belpre’ prize in young-adult literature.
