— TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Athletes, coaches and fans are gathering to remember the University of Alabama's late athletics director, Mal Moore.
Hundreds of football players, gymnasts, basketball players and others filled the floor of Coleman Coliseum for a ceremony Thursday afternoon to celebrate the life of Moore.
Old-time country and western music played over the coliseum speakers as the crowd gathered.
Moore first came to Alabama in 1958 as a football player under coach and mentor Paul "Bear" Bryant. He died Saturday less than two weeks after retiring from the job he held since 1999.
Perhaps most notably as athletic director, the 73-year-old Moore hired Alabama football coach Nick Saban in 2007. Saban has since brought three national championships to Tuscaloosa.
