Fire sparked by lightning destroys barn

CLEMENTS — A fire Monday — believed to have been sparked by an early morning thunderstorm — destroyed a barn but caused no injuries on Bell Road west of Athens, an official said.

Clements Fire Department received a 911 call about 3 a.m. and rushed to the barn on Bell Road, which is located between Zehner and Blackburn roads, to find it already engulfed in flames, Clements Assistant Fire Chief Tim Grubbs told The News Courier.

“The barn was fully involved and on the ground when we arrived,” Grubbs said. “It was a total loss.”

A neighbor noticed the fire and telephoned 911.

No one was injured and the small barn contained no livestock or farm equipment, the assistant chief said.

About 20 firefighters, including those from Tanner Volunteer Fire Department who were called for mutual aide, battled the blaze and kept it from spreading, Grubbs said. Firefighters were at the scene about 90 minutes, he said.

“We are pretty sure it was a lightning strike.” Grubbs said.

Thunderstorms, packing lightning, produced heavy rain in North Alabama after 3 a.m.
