Area drug agents seize 58 pounds of pot

Limestone County drug officers and members of the Madison-Morgan Strategic Counter Drug Team seized nearly 58 pounds of marijuana in a Wednesday raid on a southeast Limestone residence.

Sheriff Mike Blakely said his department had received “numerous complaints” over the last couple of years on a Larry Ray Long, 51, of 28229, Schrimsher Road, Madison, and agents had been working to collect evidence for at least a year.

“Long is one of the major traffickers in Southeast Limestone County,” said Blakely. “We gathered enough evidence to develop probable cause to obtain a search warrant and we executed it at about 2:30 p.m. (Wednesday).”

Long is charged with trafficking in marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Blakely said Long has been arrested in the past, but not on drug-related charges.

The marijuana was contained in a travel trailer adjacent to Long’s property near Greenbrier. Most of the marijuana was either bound tightly with cellophane into bale-shaped packages of various sizes or gallon-size recloseable plastic bags. Agents also confiscated a thriving 6-foot marijuana plant growing behind Long’s residence.

Blakely estimated the 58 pounds of pot has a street value of about $58,000.
