Governor, others speak out over UA sororities

TUSCALOOSA — A decision by University of Alabama sororities to pass over young black women for membership and retain their all-white status is raising concern from the governor, the son of legendary football coach Paul "Bear" Bryant and an Alabama trustee whose step granddaughter was among those rejected for membership.

Gov. Robert Bentley said members should be chosen on their qualifications, not their color.

At a university board of trustees meeting Friday, board President Pro Tem Paul Bryant Jr. said the board does not support segregation of any university organizations on account of race.

Another trustee, former Alabama Supreme Court Justice John England Jr., confirmed that his step granddaughter was passed over for membership. England said he's encouraged to see sorority members speaking out about what happened.

According to the student newspaper, Crimson White, alumnae from four sororities blocked two black students with high scores from from pledging this year.
