Sherri Adams Run: For the breast cancer fight

ATHENS —  If you’re putting off until the last minute to register for the Sherri Adams Pink Ribbon Run, well, it’s about that time.

The second annual fund-raiser steps off Saturday at 9 a.m. and online registration ends tonight. Visit www.sherriadamsrun.com. The cost is $25 per person; $15 for students.

However, there will be registration at the 5k (3.1 miles) run/walk, which could see close to 700 participants, according to Shelli Waggoner with the Athens-Limestone Hospital Foundation.

“Last year, we had 440 runners,” she said. “I’m really proud of that. On Friday, we had (more than) 440 and we had people sign up over the weekend and (Monday).

“We could have about 600 to 700 runners. I’m really excited.”

There is a form available at the website and participants can print it out and bring to the packet pickup Friday or to the race site Saturday at Fitness Park, she said.

The run/walk honors the memory of Sherri Adams and all those who lost their fight with breast cancer.

Adams, a nurse at Limestone Health Facility, was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 34. She underwent a double mastectomy, chemotherapy, reconstruction and drug therapy. However, the chemo treatments weakened her heart and she died in August 2011.

Proceeds from the run will benefit the Athens-Limestone Hospital Pink Elephant Mammogram Scholarship Fund. This program allows women in Limestone County without insurance or sufficient insurance to receive annual mammograms.

After the run, there will be a Survivors Walk, Waggoner said. “It’s a nice event, a good time for them.”
