Winter coat drive ongoing at Inez's

— An embroidered Bible passage from the Book of Genesis hangs on the brick wall at Inez’s Soul Food for Real and messages of goodwill are given out to customers in tandem with heaping spoonfuls of chicken and dumplings.

For Selena Cain, who named the downtown Athens restaurant after her beloved grandmother, Inez Turner-Freeman, the spirit of giving is an essential element of the approaching holiday season.

The restaurant, located at 102 E. Washington St., across from the Clinton Street courthouse annex, is accepting gently worn or new coats, hats and gloves for men, women and children in the community.

“We want to be a blessing to others,” said Cain. “Winter is almost upon us, and believe it or not, some people don’t have a nice, warm coat, hat or gloves to wear.”

Inez’s, which was among several local businesses to collect school supplies earlier this fall, has set up a food donation bin for the holidays. Cain said the restaurant is also sponsoring two local families for Thanksgiving.

Inez’s will be closed during the Thanksgiving holiday while the staff handles catering orders. But Cain said her extended family will be gathering at the restaurant on Nov. 28, and she invited anyone seeking food or fellowship to join her family for a home-cooked Thanksgiving meal.

Items will be accepted Monday through Friday at the restaurant. For more information, contact Cain at 256-874-2557.
