Six arrested on drug-related charges

— A “drug deal gone bad” resulted in the arrest of six people at an Athens apartment complex Monday night.

An occupant of apartment 307 told officers his brother, Jamey Phillips and a friend, Tia McCurry, had come over to “hang out.” A short time later, several people beat on the door, he said, asking for Phillips.

When the door was opened, the people rushed in and demanded money they said Phillips had stolen.

In the meantime officers were called to the Higgins Estates Apartments in reference to the disturbance, arriving in time to separate all parties and determine the disturbance was the result of a drug deal.

Officers said Phillips made a deal with Shelton Hobbs to sell him Roxicodone tablets for $15 each. Phillips met Hobbs in the parking lot and gave him $750. After Phillips received the money, police say he ran inside the apartment.

Arrested were Phillips, McCurry, Hobbs, Kenneth Turner, Ashley Meredith and Hazel Thomas. All were charged with conspiracy to commit a controlled substance crime.

After being booked at the police department, all were transported to the Limestone County Jail. Bail was set at $5,000 each.
