Sartorial charm aids scholars’ bowl team’s success at tourney

— An unlikely good-luck charm has fueled a successful season for the senior high division scholars’ bowl team from Elkmont High School.

Dressed in colorful, flowing tops or dapper bow ties, the Elkmont team won four of five rounds to capture the 2013 county championship during the Feb. 15 Limestone County tournament at Blue Springs Elementary.

Elkmont defeated Tanner, West Limestone, runner-up East Limestone and third-place Ardmore in round-robin play. A close loss to Clements in the final round prevented the Red Devils from finishing with an undefeated record after placing second in last year’s tournament.

“I’m proud of them. We were able to win this year by beating East head-to-head and going 4-1 in the tournament,” said Linda Schmidt, a secondary math teacher at Elkmont who has coached the senior-division team the past three seasons. “My kids wear bow ties on purpose as a lucky charm, and I ask them to dress up for competitions. I think it shows we’re serious about what we’re doing.”

The Red Devils were led by senior team captain Matthew Clem and 10th-grader Michael Farris, who won the high scorer award. The team includes seniors Will Kirkpatrick, Lacresha Watkins and Wes Isham, 11th-graders Karen McNeill and 10th-graders Paige Cooper and Sara Kirkpatrick.
