Court gives Alabama more time in appeal of ex-prof

Associated Press

— HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — A court is giving the state another week to answer the appeal of a former Alabama university professor convicted of murdering three colleagues.

The Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals granted a request by the state attorney general's office in the case of Amy Bishop.

Bishop pleaded guilty in the slayings and is serving a life sentence. She waived her rights to an appeal but is now challenging the case anyway.

Al.com (http://bit.ly/Z7kqqL ) reports that Bishop attorney Ron Smith says a judge made errors when he explained Bishop's rights. The appeal says that mistake means the case should be overturned.

Bishop pleaded guilty in September to opening fire during a faculty meeting at the University of Alabama in Huntsville in February 2010.

Three people died, and three more were wounded.
