ASU, United Way organize better response to crises

ATHENS — A small band of Athens State University students have devised a better way of coordinating volunteers for crises such as the 2011 tornadoes.

Following severe weather events in Limestone County, including the April 27 tornado outbreak and the March 2 tornadoes of last year, the United Way of Athens-Limestone County became responsible for organizing volunteers.

Kaye Young McFarlen, executive director of the local agency, said early efforts following the disaster were somewhat rudimentary, with names of available workers and their skill sets written on index cards and sticky notes.
