Man charged in another false robbery accusation

— For the second time in a week, Athens Police have charged a man with falsely reporting a robbery.

On April 30, police received a call from a man claiming to have been robbed by two men at Walmart between 9:30 and 11:30 p.m., Chief Floyd Johnson said Thursday.

“Officer Brandon Colburn became suspicious while talking with the victim, so he contacted Walmart’s security and viewed there (surveillance) video,” Johnson said. “They were unable to locate any problem in the area that the victim said the robbery occurred.”

The following day, Investigator Tim McIntire viewed the tape again and was also unable to locate the alleged robbery or see anything else that appeared out of place, Johnson said.

“Investigator McIntire checked with the victim’s employer and their records showed the victim was working at the time he said the robbery occurred,” the chief said. “McIntire gave the victim several chances to come in and explain the situation. However, he didn’t show up.”

McIntire obtained a warrant for Joshua Adam Silas, 32, of 28465 Easter Ferry Road in Lester, for false report of an incident, records show. He was arrested Wednesday night, booked at the Police Department and transferred to the Limestone County Jail.

In a separate case Wednesday, police arrested a Rogersville man for falsely reporting he was robbed at gunpoint of $10,000 on Tuesday.
