Athens-Limestone Hospital chief chosen as Huntsville’s next CFO

— Athens-Limestone Hospital CEO Kelli Powers has less than four months remaining until officially replacing retiring Huntsville Hospital Chief Financial Officer Lonnie Younger, but she said her focus remains fixed on ongoing projects as her successor is being finalized.

“I have accepted the system CFO job at Huntsville,” she confirmed via email Wednesday. “I love Athens and this hospital, and it has been a very difficult decision ... we are interviewing my replacement and I will still be very involved (in ALH).”

Powers will oversee the Huntsville system’s finances beginning July 1, according to a press release from Huntsville Hospital. Younger has served as Huntsville finance chief since 2006.

“Lonnie has been an invaluable team member for our hospital,” Huntsville system CEO David Spillers said in the release. “I am thankful that Lonnie has agreed to help us during the transition period for Kelli, and to remain available to assist us following his retirement in July.

“We are excited that Kelli will succeed Lonnie in this important role ... her experience and energy will be valuable to our hospital system.”

Since joining ALH in March 2010, Powers has shepherded the hospital through major renovations from the emergency room and admitting area to the mother-baby unit and cafeteria.

Projects include revamping patient rooms, bringing in a long-term acute care hospital wing and building a professional services building across the street from the hospital.

She also has touted the facility’s infection rate, which Powers has said is the lowest in North Alabama and fourth lowest in the state.
