UPDATE: Athens police officer Tasers suspect in Walmart theft

ATHENS — An Athens Police officer had to use an electroshock weapon to stop a fleeing  man suspected of stealing a computer, beer and other items from Walmart on Sunday afternoon.

A Walmart employee called police after allegedly seeing a man steal the items from the store on U.S. 72 East in Athens, Chief Floyd Johnson said Monday. When Officer James Rogers arrived, the employee pointed out the suspect and the vehicle into which he had allegedly placed stolen goods, Johnson said.

Rogers blocked the suspect’s vehicle with his patrol car, approached him and, after a short conversation, the suspect ran, the chief said. Rogers apprehended the suspect — Markus Maurice Prince, 45, of 413 Davis Court in Decatur — and arrested him on a charge of second-degree theft of property, Johnson said.

The $614 in property, which included a computer and software, two packages of beer, a bed-in-a-bag, men's clothing and underwear and other items, was recovered and returned to the store, the chief said.

Prince was booked at the police department and transferred to the Limestone County Jail, where bail is set at $5,000.
