Arrest made in air-conditioning unit theft

— When the owner of Kenny’s Kutz Barber Shop on U.S. 72 West in Athens noticed his air conditioner wasn’t working Saturday, he went outside to check it out.

It was gone.

Kutz reported the theft of the central unit, valued at $3,000, to the Athens Police Department, Chief Floyd Johnson said.

A short time later, a barbershop customer overheard the owner talking about the theft, Johnson said, and told the owner he bought a central unit earlier in the day for $150.

The customer returned the unit while officers were on the scene and told officials who sold him the unit.

As a result, Sgt. Johnny Campbell arrested Jimmy Lee Free, 37, of 22361 Monterey Drive, on a charge of first-degree theft of property.

Free was booked at the Athens Police Department and transferred to the Limestone County Jail, where he was released after posting a $5,000 bond.
