Athens Utilities: Outages from April 28 storms down to 200 customers

— As of tonight, those without power in Limestone County has plummeted to 200 since the April 28 storms left 16,000 Athens Utilities customers in the dark.

“As of 9 p.m. today, 200 customers are still without power,” Golden said. “We want them to know they’re not forgotten and if they haven’t been restored by tonight, our crews will continue to work on it Wednesday.”

As of Tuesday, crews from the Tennessee Valley Authority and 11 other municipalities were still aiding the utility effort, which has restored electricity to 15,800 customers within eight days.

“It’s been a huge team effort, and we’re proud of the line workers and ladies in our office,” Golden said. “Logistically, this has been an exceptional feat to accomplish since the damage was so widespread.”

The EF3 twisters knocked down 200 utility poles countywide and took down the Poplar Creek substation in western Limestone County.

The storms heavily damaged or destroyed at least 271 residences, impacted 747 homes and caused $4.25 million in tornado-related expenses in the city and county, according to a Red Cross assessment report released Monday.
