Student received full semester of suspension

— A West Limestone High School student is remanded to the Limestone County Alternative School for the remainder of the spring semester and a portion of the fall semester.

The Limestone County Board of Education ruled Monday during a closed student hearing to suspend the student for one full semester for violating the school system’s drug policy, which prohibits the “unlawful sale, purchase, furnishing or giving, or possession of a drug or drug paraphernalia or alcoholic beverage.”

Drugs, weapons or fighting violations are classified as Class III offenses, and automatically result in a review by a rotating committee comprised of a Central Office employee and two school administrators.

The committee can choose to rule on the student’s case, or forward certain offenses to the school board for a student hearing. Student hearings typically result in an expulsion or long-term suspension due to the nature of the violation.
