Cause of fire at Owens mobile home undetermined

The cause of the fire that destroyed an unoccupied mobile home in the Owens community Tuesday has not yet been determined, an official said.

Owens Fire Chief Gary Lovell said Tuesday there were several people at the unoccupied, singlewide home on Sugar Way when firefighters arrived just after midnight Tuesday. There was no power to the home and, from what Lovell was told, no one was living there but, rather, using the dwelling for storage.

“When we got there, the trailer was pretty much on the ground,” the chief said. “We kept it contained. That’s about all we could do.”

Firefighters were called one minute before midnight after 911 received a fire call from 22270 Sugar Way, Lovell said. Firefighters from Owens and West Limestone kept the blaze from spreading, said Lovell, who was on the scene until 2:30 or 3 a.m.

Firefighters were called back to the home about 9:30 or 10 a.m. after a caller said the fire had rekindled, but Lovell said one of the firefighters who responded told him there was really nothing to it.

Contrary to some news reports about the fire, neither the owner of the mobile home nor anyone else at the scene was arrested on outstanding warrants, Sheriff Mike Blakely said. A woman was arrested at another address on Sugar Way an hour earlier, but that incident was not related to the fire, the sheriff said.
