— An Athens woman was arrested Saturday because sheriff’s investigators believe she committed a burglary near Owens.
Sheriff Mike Blakely said dispatchers received a burglary alarm at K&S Deli on Alabama 99 at 4:12 a.m. Saturday morning. When deputies arrived, they noticed a window had been broken out.
The owner arrived a short time later and discovered $694 missing from a cash register. A review of surveillance footage showed a former employee, 22-year-old Brandy Nicole Johnson of Heron Drive, Athens, breaking the store window with a hammer. Blakely said the video also revealed she was wearing gloves and a hooded sweatshirt.
Investigator Jeff Kilpatrick spotted Johnson’s vehicle at about 8:30 a.m. Saturday as she traveled east on Elm Street near the Limestone County Jail. Kilpatrick stopped her vehicle and placed Johnson under arrest.
Blakely said a hammer, gloves and hooded sweatshirt was found in floorboard of the vehicle. He said she also had $615 in her purse.
After being charged, Johnson was released on $2,500 bond.
