Man charged with stealing from Athens relative

A Jasper man remains jailed following his arrest in connection with the theft of a pistol and other items from the home of an Athens relative in March, an official said.

Athens Police arrested David Dwight Smith, 35, of 3828 Burrows Crossing, Thursday night on two counts of theft and one count of possession of a forged instrument, records show.

Smith is charged with first-degree theft in the March 10 theft of a 2002 Jeep Cherokee from the home, located in the 100 block of Hammond Street, Police Chief Floyd Johnson said. He is charged with second-degree theft for allegedly stealing from the home a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson brand pistol, Xbox game, nail gun, skill saw, impact drill, leather motorcycle jacket, gold chain, gold bracelet and two knifes, Johnson said.

He is also charged with second-degree possession of a forged instrument for allegedly taking a check and cashing it, Johnson said.

Smith was booked at the Police Department and transferred to the Limestone County Jail, where bail is set at $10,000, records show.
