UNA to implement fee for dual enrollment program

— FLORENCE, Ala. (AP) — High school students looking to earn college credit through a University of North Alabama dual enrollment program will now have to pay to participate.

School officials recently approved instituting a $100 per course fee for high school students working to earn college credits. The dual enrollment program initially offered free courses, but university officials say the program has grown more than administrators anticipated.

High school students took 800 courses at UNA during the 2012-13 academic year, Vice President of University of North Alabama academic affairs John Thornell told the TimesDaily of Florence (http://bit.ly/14aHfdy ). The fees will be used to "to create an infrastructure to support the program," he said.

Some of the state's other four-year schools have also implemented fees for dual credit programs. At the University of Alabama, a three-credit hour course would cost more than $700 and the same class would cost nearly $1,000 at Auburn.

Some trustees said the fee was too low considering what other schools are charging, but vice president of the board of trustees, Marty Abroms, said it's important to keep the dual enrollment program affordable.

"I hope we can keep this a bargain for our local students," he said, "It is a great recruiting tool."
