BREAKING: Limestone man arrested after shooting man in chest

Shooting victim listed in fair condition at Huntsville Hospital

— A Limestone County man is in custody after shooting a Clements man in the chest this morning in front of a trailer home on Sledge Road, said Sheriff Mike Blakely.

In an incident described as a possible domestic dispute, the sheriff said Athens resident Darrell Eugene Adams, 47, of 9803 Snake Road is charged with first-degree assault after shooting an unarmed Jason Appleton of 11053 Sledge Road.

Appleton, taken to Huntsville Hospital, was listed in fair condition in the surgical intensive care unit, said hospital spokeswoman Pam Sparks at 3:30 p.m. today.

“Appleton stated he had gone to the mailbox when Adams drives up and shoots him one time in the chest with a .22-caliber pistol, dead-square in the right (pectoral),” Blakely said.

Blakely said Adams’ estranged wife was at the Sledge Road trailer home at the time of the shooting, which occurred at about 8:30 a.m. Adams told the sheriff he and his wife had been separated for several months and are in the process of getting a divorce.

“According to Adams, he went to Sledge Road to tell his wife she had some mail,” Blakely said. “After the shooting, Adams left the scene and was arrested a short time later at his place of employment, a farm in southwestern Limestone County.”

Adams was booked at 10:10 a.m. and remains in custody at the Limestone County Jail as of this afternoon in lieu of $10,000 bail.
