APD nabs suspect in 6-month-old theft case

— Athens Police recently tracked down an elusive suspect in a 6-month-old theft case, arresting an Elkmont resident for allegedly taking an array of items from a pickup truck at Athens-Limestone Hospital.

Michael Tyrone-Chance Hunt, 26, of 27750 Bethel Road, is charged with breaking and entering a vehicle on Oct. 29, 2013, said Police Chief Floyd Johnson on Friday.

Johnson said officers responded to a report of a theft in the parking lot at the hospital, developing and identifying a suspect after an officer recovered one of the victim’s marked belongings.

“When officers arrived, the victim told officers he was inside the hospital and when he returned to his truck, he noticed someone had taken his property out of the bed of his truck,” he said.

The stolen property included a 150-piece tool kit, an air mattress and a suitcase with medication and clothing, according to police.

“A few days later, Officer David Posey contacted Sgt. Eric White about the theft,” Johnson said. “Posey had recovered a pill bottle ... with the victim’s name on it.”

The chief said White obtained an arrest warrant for Hunt less than three weeks following the initial report.

After being booked Thursday night, records show Hunt was released on $2,500 bail early Saturday from the Limestone County Jail.
