UPDATED: Icy road conditions in Limestone leads to crashes

From staff reports

— Motorists are urged to use caution this morning as a mix of snow and sleet has wreaked havoc on roads in Limestone County.

At least two wrecks have occurred on bridges on U.S. 72 west. One crash occurred at a bridge in East Limestone County in which a truck collided with a guardrail. Another two-vehicle crash occurred near the intersection of U.S. 72 and Line Road. In that crash, a black Dodge Durango sustained heavy damage and an airbag deployment. Sgt. Frank Murphy with the Athens Police Department said one person was transported to Athens-Limestone Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Crews with Athens Public Works were out this morning sanding bridges and overpasses within the city limits.

Limestone remains under a winter weather advisory until noon today. The system that is dropping snow and freezing rain is a fast-moving system, however, and temperatures will warm above freezing.
